What goes into the surf score.
For surfing, swell period carries the most weight, then swell size, wind and swell direction. Offshore or light wind helps. Onshore wind over about 5 knots pulls the score down fast.
Swell direction is checked against the way each break faces. A good swell from the wrong angle still scores low, because it won't reach the spot properly.
Bodyboarding scores differently.
The bodyboarding score likes steeper, heavier waves and puts up with more onshore wind than the surfing score. So the same morning can rate higher for bodyboarding than for surfing. Pick the activity you actually do.
Why Perth needs a local swell number.
Most of the Perth coast sits behind the offshore islands and reefs, so the swell offshore is often a lot bigger than what reaches the beach. Fathom estimates the wave height at each spot and shows it next to the offshore swell. Where a spot has no local wave model yet, it says so.
